'Merica!

Happy Fourth of July, one and all!  I hope you had an awesome day full of freedom and independence and American pride.  Between heading out to morning mass, helping friends of ours clean their yard after a small tornado went through and working at the hotel I didn't have time for a full blog post, but here's some photos from my day!

God Bless America!

ReginaCon - Day 2

ReginaCon Day

And here is the events of the second day of ReginaCon, also known as The Fairy Tale Novel Get-Together or The Fairy Tale Novel Fan Gathering. ReginaCon is much shorter.

These would be pictures from day 2, because I'm afraid I have no pictures from Day 1 - at least not at Regina's house.  Day 1 was mostly spent in touring Manassas Battlefield and Arlington Cemetery with my grandparents, who provided our transportation to Virginia.  The Battlefield - sight of the first major battle of the war and a second battle just prior to Antietam - was quite lovely and rather different than Shiloh and Gettysburg.  I knew something was different, but I couldn't figure it out at first.  Then I noticed - no monuments.  Well, there was one that was erected by the soldiers who fought at First Manassas, but the usual monuments and markers for all the regiments who fought and died on this piece of ground were absent.  Also the only statue in sight was a large and impressive sculpture of General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson.  It was simpler, but no less profound.

Arlington Cemetery was just - amazing.  There are soooo many grave sights there, it's just so sobering.  I had the good fortune to witness the Changing of the Guard Ceremony at the Tomb of the Unkowns... was that beautiful.  The extreme precision and detail and respect that goes into it is just awesome.  For me though, the highlight of my visit was Arlington House.  To think that General Robert E. Lee lived there, walked on the exact same ground that I walked on... I know he was at Gettysburg, and I went there to... but on a battlefield you can't be sure exactly where everyone was because it is so big.  But there... to know that I was on the same ground as a man whom I admire so greatly - it was a very powerful experience for me.

And then of course there was arriving at Regina's house.  No one heard us drive up, so we were able to walk in on them all eating dinner and see their surprised and (hopefully) delighted faces.  I was thrilled to finally meet my dear brother and sister, Paul and Elena, and meet Laura who is an amazing girl.  Lanta showed up a little later and knocked me over.  I was very happy to see her too, and meet Dayandnight and Miss Eliza Bennet.  We talked for a bit and then after the sun had set we all went swimming in the pond, dubbing ourselves "The Midnight Swimmers".  Three more people arrived and joined us as well.

Now to the day that I have pictures for.  (I do have pictures of Manassas and Arlington, if you want to see them later.)

After praying the Rosary, we all packed into the cars and drove down the road to pick blueberries.  'Twas very hot, but there were clouds for some of the time, so it wasn't that bad.  We picked lots of blueberries, some of which Paul kept throwing at me *frowns at Paul*.  I did hit him a few times though!  David found a lonely pair of little girl's sunglasses at the end of one of the rows, and we adopted them.

We finished picking and drove back, during which I had a lovely conversation with Regina, and found that five more girls had arrived!  Greetings and introductions were exchanged and made and then after lunch we listened to Regina talk on "Evangelizing the Imagination and How to Create Evil Characters if you are a Devout Christian".  What a wonderful and helpful talk!

The rest of the afternoon was free time and some of us went shopping for more food while the rest watched "The Scarlet Pimpernel" (1982).  That was an awesome movie!!!!  Made for TV, so a little long... but was it good!

The day's events concluded with a talent show during which yours truely performed "Upside Down" (a recent forum adventure) along with Kathleen, Yaviel and some of our friends who where there.  The talent show finished with a lovely theatrical reading of "The Importance of Being Earnest" by the Shirefield Players.

And that concludes the events of Day 2!  Hannah, I hope that was enough detail.  ;) Day 3 coming soon.

Pretty in Pink

The other day during a thrift store expedition, my mother happened upon this pink jumper...

It was too small for her and too big for me, besides the fact that I think the top part was hideous (HUGE armholes and a rather unflattering neckline and bodice) but the skirt was adorable.  So swishy and fun!  Luckily it happened that the jumper was not all one piece, so I brought it home, ripped the pieces a part and ended up with...
A beautiful new skirt!!!!  I just love it.  It's a wonderful pink color, a nice, light weight cotton and it's perfect for spinning and dancing in!  The headband I'm wearing with it is actually the sash that went with the dress.  I didn't feel like wearing it as a belt at the time, but it works fabulously as a headband. Fun, fun fun!
And then I got new wedge shoes or whatever they are technically called from Payless that are just adorable and go great with the outfit.  =)

Thus ends the tale of my second outfit remodeling!

Week in Feminine Hair ~ Day 6

I'm a bit more formal today, because I'm going to a Regency Party at my friends house!
Today's Outfit
Dress - My dress was a bridesmaid's gown that my mom wore for my aunt's wedding.  It was a little big on me, and the top came down pretty low, so I took it in a bit and made a new bodice!
Jewelry - My earrings are small crystal drop earrings that I found at a clothing exchange, I got my pearl necklace with the cross for my First Holy Communion.
Shawl - My silver shawl was from Wal-Mart.  I love these things!

My Hair - I did a Recency-style today with two curls in front, a bun in back (held in place by my handy hair-net!) and a few curls beneath.

Week in Feminine Hair ~ Day 5

Today insane little me decided to take my photographs out in 20 degree weather!  It was COLD!

Today's Outfit
Shirt - Today I'm wearing a lovely flowered blouse (originally from Land's End) that I got at Goodwill.  It's one of my favorites, with tiny little flowers, a collar and ruffles on the front.
Skirt - This isn't just any skirt - it's a part!  What is a part? You beg to know?   Well, "part" is the name I came up with for a skirt that both pants and a skirt!  It's great for climbing and running around.
Jewelry: For today I put on another pair of heart earring and a mock cameo broach.
Scarf - My red scarf (I do love that shade of red) was from either Wall-Mart or Khols, but I think it was from Khols.  It works well for either a scarf or a shawl.

My hair - Today I put my hair up in two lace braids, joined in the back with my gold barrette.  A lave braid is very simple, it's just like the regular French braid, only you pull hair from just the outside, instead of both sides.

Week in Feminine Hair ~ Day 4

Today's Outfit
Shirt - I'm not sure what these shirts are called - they've got to have a name - but I call them collage shirts.  I got this one for Christmas, and I absolutely love it.  It's purple and cream and blues and greens with pretty snowflakes, elegant script and shiny dodaddy thingys.  The best part about it is it goes with blue, green, pink, purple and tan skirts!

Skirt - My skirt is an olive green with tan embroidery that I bought from Blair a few years ago.  It's flowy and comfortable and great for wearing both around the house and out and about.
Jewelry - Today I'm wearing silver wide mini-hoops, and my rose/miraculous medal necklace a friend bought for me in Rome.

Hair - Today I went with a pony-tail.  I think that, if done properly, ponytails can be pretty as well as feminine.  I don't mean the kinds where it looks like the girl slept with the pony tail in and half of it is falling out, or there are lumps of hair sticking up all over her head like some brunette mountain range, but a well done ponytail when you've actually taken the extra minute to brush the top of your head so it is flat!  It really doesn't take that much extra time and it looks sooooo much more feminine!
Sorry, that's a pet peeve of mine.  ;)
So nicely done ponytails are cute and casual, throw in a scrunchy, bow, or cute ribbon and tada!

Week in Feminine Hair and Dress Day 4 - Yaviel's

Today's Outfit: A teal shirt, which I got from Rose, and my denim skirt that I made about two years ago.

Hair: Five braids pulled together in the back. (hairdo courtesy of Kathleen)

Week in Feminine Hair and Dress Day 3 - Yaviel's

Today's Outfit: The shirt is layered black sweater over a white blouse (though it's pre-made layers) Skirt: burgundy one from the mall!
Hat: My all time fav hat from my darling "auntie" Jo!

Hair: Some braided headband thingy do that Rose did!

Week in Feminine Hair - Day 3

Today's Style
Shirt - Today I'm wearing a lovely loose fitting blouse that I received for Christmas.  I love the layered look (yes, it's all one piece) and I love the color.
Skirt - Today's skirt is a navy blue knee-length skirt that I commandeered from my sister last year and never gave back.  It's cute and goes with a lot!
Jewelry - I'm modeling my cute Effiel Tower earrings, a dainty necklace with silver roses and a braided purple bracelet.

Today I went simple with my hairstyle.  Wearing your hair down can look simple, elegant and feminine all at the same time.  Throw in a cute headband, headscarf or ribbon and you're good to go!

My Christmas

So this post shall jump around a lot because Blogger is absolutely evil when it comes to photographs... to put it mildly.  Anyhow...

These are both from the day after Christmas!  (New blouse!!!!)  My sisters and I went insane... we were walking around outside, it was snowing beautifully, I happened to look over at our pine tree and gasped "IT'S NARNIA!"  We then also recalled that we have a lampost.  So what did we do?  We ran back inside and changed into semi-period outfits (or as close as we could get) and ran back outside without coats to take photos!  My hands were soooooo cold...

Yay! Our light-up houses.  We have little people for them now, which you can semi-see standing on the train station.

My Christmas outfit, or the back of it, anyhow.  The front view wouldn't upload, but I suppose that's fine.  Now you can all just admire my lovely hair-do.

*sings* Oh Christmas Tree, oh Christmas Tree!

My presents. =)  Well, minus the clothes (which you'll probably see at some point) and *gasp* I didn't take a picture of my piano music!  How could I?  Deary me...
I got the piano music for Josh Groban's CDs - "Awake" and "Closer"!!!! I was soooo happy.  They are the best!  Maybe when I get good enough I'll record one or two and post them on here for you to listen to.

And that's it for now!  I may have more photos for you later, or I may not.  You'll have to wait and see!
