What's your favorite out of the trilogy?
The Fellowship of the Ring

Do you believe it has an allegory? No i do not, because an allegory is intentional by the author, and Tolkien specifically said in the Forward to the Lord of the Rings that he did not write the Lord of the Rings with any allegory.

Hmmm, Eowyn because you see her more and get more into her character. (I'm talking books here, btw)

The Shire! Hobbits!

Meriadoc Brandybuck and Peregrin Took!

Ooh... Arwen!

Faramir, i like Faramir

Ack? How can they ask a girl what her favorite dress is? All of Eowyn's and all of Arwen's except for her purple dream dress and the one where she confronts Elrond about her vision of her son.

The battle where Sauron gets destroyed. (And brilliant me can't remember the name of it at the moment. =P I'm sure i will later though.)

ONE favorite quote? That's just not fair!!!! Okay, i'm doing two one from the book and one from the movie:

Sam: In the end, it's only a passing thing, this shadow. A new day will come and when it does it'll shine out all the clearer!

Book: "They cannot conquer forever!"

Scene? At Aragorn's coronation, when everyone bows to the four hobbits!

Piece of Jewelry?
That's a weird question... Arwen's necklace i suppose.

Peter vs. Haldir?
HWell, i'll have to break with my allegiance to LotR briefly and say Peter because you really don't get to know Haldir well enough for me to chose him over my "hubby"

The Dancing Lawn vs. Lothlorien? Lothlorien of course!

Centaurs vs. Elves?

Peter's sword vs. Anduril?
Anduril, Peter's sword doesn't have anywhere near the history or coolness of Aragorn

  1. Ha,ha! I love it! :D
Oooh, and "Dressing With Dignity" is a great book-I enjoyed reading that immensely!

  2. Very fun!

Though, Rose dear, I'm going to debate you on the allegory thing with Lord of the Rings. I know that Tolkien said he didn't write any allegory; he didn't even like allegory that much (if I remember right). However, there are some things that just point so obviously to aspects of our faith, it must have occurred to him while writing. There are a couple examples in particular which I could name, but I don't want to make my post too long...but tell me if you want more! :)

  3. Dearest Jo,

Here is Tolkein's quote for future referance:

[...]But i cordially dislike allegory in all its manifestations, and always have done so since i grew old and wary enough to detect its presence... I think that many confuse 'applicability' with 'allegory'; but the one resides in the freedom of the reader, and the other in the purposed domination of the author.[...]

So my point of view is this, Tolkien didn't write allegory, but given the deeply Catholic man that he was aspects of the faith couldn't help but appear in his writings.

So i still maintain that the Lord of the Rings is not an allegory. =)
