ReplyDeleteOooh, and "Dressing With Dignity" is a great book-I enjoyed reading that immensely!
~Addie
Very fun!
ReplyDeleteThough, Rose dear, I'm going to debate you on the allegory thing with Lord of the Rings. I know that Tolkien said he didn't write any allegory; he didn't even like allegory that much (if I remember right). However, there are some things that just point so obviously to aspects of our faith, it must have occurred to him while writing. There are a couple examples in particular which I could name, but I don't want to make my post too long...but tell me if you want more! :)
Love,
Jo
Dearest Jo,
ReplyDeleteHere is Tolkein's quote for future referance:
[...]But i cordially dislike allegory in all its manifestations, and always have done so since i grew old and wary enough to detect its presence... I think that many confuse 'applicability' with 'allegory'; but the one resides in the freedom of the reader, and the other in the purposed domination of the author.[...]
So my point of view is this, Tolkien didn't write allegory, but given the deeply Catholic man that he was aspects of the faith couldn't help but appear in his writings.
So i still maintain that the Lord of the Rings is not an allegory. =)
Love,
Rosie
