Civil War Days
Er... well, except for this one, 'cause me, myself and I is in it. This one was taken by my dear mother, but the rest are taken by me! By I? By myself? I took them? Anyhow, it was really fun to be able to dress up and walk around the battlefield and camp even though my costume is not historically accurate. Everyone else said it looked perfect, but I knew that it wasn't correct. Ah well.
GENERALS!!!!! I didn't get a shot of any Union generals, but these gentleman more than made up for it... even though they would not look at the camera!
This gun is 'Lady Molly'. While the wheels and all were replica's, the barrel is the real thing. Honestly... they were! Er, are! One of the soldiers told us that 'Lady Molly' was one of the guns used during Sherman's March to Atlanta and was fired in the battles of Atlanta, Chickamauga and Chattanooga. Pretty neat!
Feast Day!
St. Jude preached in Mesopotamia, and it is said that he is the one who brought the Shroud of Christ to there. The Shroud stayed in Mesopotamia for many years before being brought to Turin.
Due to the close relation of St. Jude's name with Judas Iscariot, early Christians often confused the two, and so did not pray for St. Jude's intercession, making him somewhat of a 'lost cause'. This is the reason that St. Jude Thaddeus is the patron saint of lost or hopeless causes as well as desperate situations.
Prayer to St. Jude
Most holy Apostle St. Jude, faithful servant and friend of Jesus, the name of the traitor who delivered the beloved Master into the hands of His enemies has caused you to be forgotten by many, but the Church honors and invokes you universally as the patron of hopeless cases, of things despaired of. Pray for me who am so miserable; make use, I implore you, of this particular privilege accorded to you, to bring visible and speedy help, where help is almost despaired of. Come to my assistance in this great need, that I may receive the consolations and succor of Heaven in all my necessities, tribulations and sufferings, particularly (here make your request), and that I may bless God with you and all the elect forever.
I promise you, O blessed St. Jude, to be ever mindful of this great favor, and I will never cease to honor you as my special and powerful patron and to do all in my power to encourage devotion to you. Amen.
St. Jude... Pray for Us!

Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington is the story of a young man plucked out of 'the wilderness' and thrust into the dirty world of politics. It was interesting to discover, while watching the first several scenes, that politics hasn't really changed all that much. There is still those underhanded dealings and powerful political manipulations.
The story opens with a Senator's death and the other Senator (Sen. Paine, the Governor and the newspaper owner's (Mr. Taylor) struggle to pick out just the right man for the job. Someone who will take orders without complaint or any questions. Such a man is imperative, because the aforementioned three are all involved in the illegal dealings.... concerning a dam, and Willit Creek. (Remember that.) Well Mr. Taylor, who pretty much controls Sen. Paine and the Governor, wants one candidate and no one else, but the public violently wants another man. The poor governor is worn thin between the two opinions until his children suggest Jefferson Smith, leader of the Boy Rangers and the hero of all the kids and the parents in the state. So Mr. Smith it is!
One of my favorite things about Mr. Smith is the fact that he is so intensely patriotic and interested in the history of the country, like myself. As one character wryly remarks upon the arrival in D.C. "My head is swollen twice its size. I never knew our country had that much history."
Mr. Smith does not have an easy start, due to misquotations by the newspapermen, but Senator Paine, a good friend of Mr. Smith's father, helps him out and suggests that Smith propose a bill of his own. Smith gets excited about that and has his secretary Miss Saunders help him write it all in one night! The bill that Smith dearly wants to get passed concerns starting a boys camp, to get the boys out of the cities and into the wilderness, where they can learn how to be men and how to be free, to learn to value their country. He drops a bomb on certain Congressmen when he proposes that it be built on .... you guessed it .... Willit Creek, the very creek that Sen. Paine, Taylor and a few others had bought illegally.
Mr. Smith - after being kept out of the senate so he wouldn't find out - finds out about the plans for the dam. The execution begins. Paine at first tries to get Smith to cooperate, but when Smith refuses, Paine does the worst thing anyone could ever do, he betrays Smith and accuses him of - among other things - blackmail, lying, and stealing.
After a particularly vicious attack and denial from Mr. Paine, the man whom Smith has admired all of his life, Smith wants to run back to his state. Saunders - who has fallen in love with the naive senator - convinces him to stay and fight for his reputation and for the truth. The next day in the Senate, Jefferson Smith sets out to do just that.
When the President grants Smith the floor, I couldn't help feeling the urge to cheer when Smith reveals that he can and will keep the floor until he has proven that he is innocent of any charge. He wants the people of his state to hear what he has to say, so they know he is telling the truth. In order to keep the floor, he cannot sit down, nor can he stop talking. The battle now begins, with Smith holding power over the Senate and Taylor (who controls all of the newspapers) spreading lies back in the home state.
I absolutely love the scene when, after Smith has been talking for 7 1/2 hours, a fellow Senator rises and asks him if he would be willing to give up the floor so they can go to bed and re-adjourn in the morning. Smith turns to the President and asks if he will still have the floor if they do so. When he is told that he will not have it unless the Chair grants it to him, Smith nods and then starts up again with "The Constitution of the United States!"
Eventually, the truth does come through, but I won't tell you how, for fear of ruining the story.
This is a great movie, about one man standing up against the lies and corruption of Washington, no matter what. It is a story of courage and perseverance; Mr. Smith ends up talking for a few minutes short of a whole day. I couldn't help but wonder if any of the Senators that we have would have the determination, the honesty or the courage to fight for the truth for that long. Would any of us be able to, for that matter? Or would we simply resign ourselves to a ruined reputation and go home?
One of the things I love about old films, is that back then it was still OK to mention God, to quote the Bible in film productions and no one would protest. Mr. Smith quotes the Bible several times during his long fight, and if those had been left out, I don't think you could have gotten the point of the film across to your audience. I am sure they would have found a way around it, but it wouldn't have had the same meaning and depth as it did.
I highly recommend watching this film, especially during this political campaign filled with lies and ruthless power-grabbing. In addition to a valuable lesson in loving our neighbor as yourself, I also learned a lot about how the Senate works as well as how a bill gets passed. It's a wonderful, clean, family-friendly film and a real treat to watch. You can't go wrong, when Mr. Smith Goes to Washington!

A Very Special Guest
We greeted them when they arrived with three small preformances us girls came up with for the occasion. (And made Louisa an honorary member of the Girls Club!) Then Lousia, Mrs. Kouris and Fr. Gibson gave us a presentation on what Lousia does in her home country, Sierra Leone, in West Africa. For a brief history of this Third World country, click here.
What they said to us we so moving, and often heartbreaking. Sierra Leone is still trying to recover from the horrible, decade long, civil war caused by the diamond mines that are found in this small land, a bit smaller than Indiana. The war destroyed the agriculture of Sierra Leone, and left hundreds of 'amputees' and widespread poverty - 95% of the population is without work. The United Nations listed Sierra Leone as one of the ten least livable countries in the world. The saddest part is that no one will help them. Fr. Gibson said that Sierra Leone is a forgotten country. No one, not even Food for the Poor or Catholic Relief Servises will send aid. They are too intimidated by the government.
Louisa (You can read her whole story here) met Father Gibson when she was 17. Her family had not had food in two days, and her brother was in desperate need of medical care. Fr. Gibson gave them aid, and in thanks Lousia (a Muslim) began attendin daily Mass. She was baptized in the Catholic Church at 19. Lousia also began to search out those who needed aid the most, and was inspired to open a home for orphan children, children of single parents, and children who do not know where their parents are. This was how Savior of the World Children's Center was born.
Currently, Louisa has adopted 33 children. She is only 25 years old. They are very poor, all living in a tiny rented house, without running water or electricity and eating one main meal a day. Currently, they are in the process of building a new house, where Louisa wants to adopt more children and start a Catholic school.
Like I said before, they are in need of money and aid. If you can donate, then please go to this site, where there is an address to send money. I know they appreciate an support they can get!
It was a very wonderful opprotuinity to meet this corageous young women.
Fr. Gibson. Yes, he is related to Mel Gibson! He is Mel Gibson's cousin. We found out that not only is he one day older than one of the mom's who was at the talk, but Bl. Mother Teresa was at his ordination, and gave him his missionary assignments while she was alive!
This is Louisa with some of the club members, when we presented her with a wreath, like the ones we wear.

THE RULES
Link to the person who tagged you, list the rules, write six random things about yourself, tag six-ish people by leaving comments on their blogs and let the person who tagged you know that you've written the post.
1. I am the virtual mother of 12 kids, the virtual wife of King Peter the Magnificent, virtual aunt 34 people on the Fairy Tale Novels Forum, as well as a virtual great-aunt *faints* and the virtual sister of nine amazing girls and one boy. (My "big brother" Paulie :) ) I love being apart of this virtual family, we have developed close relationships and have a blast coming up with weird and wacky adventures. (Ex: My niece married the Witch King, My great-aunt got kidnapped by Sauron, I was proposed to by Sauron, etc.) Being part of a virtual family is only half of it, joining the forum and making all these wonderful friends is one of the best things that has happened to me!
2. I am a complete Civil War Nut as well as a Victim of Tolkienmania. Before these to I was a horse lover, but that died a year or so ago. Which after reading all those stories about the horse people who lost their horsenuttinessinteenageyearsbecauseofboys, I'm not surprised. Though I didn't stop being a horse lover due to boys... I think it was more of the overwhelming influence of Tolkien and the Civil War. I don't think I will lose either of those though. Like my unlce told me, once you've been bitten by the Civil War bug, that's it, you are hooked for life. Which is perfectly fine with me!
3. I have preformed in three church Christmas plays, four self-written skits, and (as of January 2009) seven plays with the Little Flowers Catholic Dance and Theatre Troupe. Throw in the "Life and Liberty" dance performance we did last May and it's eight. So... 15 productions in all. In one ("Remember Me") I had seven parts, three were back-to-back! Was that hectic! I loved the parts, but two 3 minute or less costume changes right in a row was more than enough! They are a bit fun, I will admit... and it certainly is helpful to be a 'quick change artist'!
4. I do not like reading poetry. Yes, I will admit that the thought of sitting down with a book of poems is enough to make me want to run away screaming. About the only poetry I will read is Tolkien's... but that is part of the story. (Now don't kill me, but my brain does tend to go on skim mode for most of the poems in the Hobbit, and one or two in the LotR). I know most of you are probably horrified and shocked... but I really don't like it. This is probably even more horrifying for those who know that I write poetry. Prepare to be shocked... I love writing poetry! Yet I dislike reading it. (Well, I like reading mine, sometimes). How strange is that?
5. I have my very own Fairy Godmother! (Actually, she is my confirmation sponsor, but you don't know that.) She is the wonderfullest person I know, and is the big sister that I never had and always longed for; a real blessing!
6. Let's make this last one really random, shall we? Hmm... let me see.... I am almost as tall as my mom (though she will not admit it) and I have a 12 year old sister who claims to be almost as tall as me (though I do not admit it.)
I now hereby tag.... The Random Evil Twins, Grace, Vicki, and Hannah

Defend Our Lord!
Send your instant e-protest message NOW.
According to the press report Corpus Christi includes a Christ-like figure who has homosexual relations with his apostles! Besides, the play uses Gospel passages in a contrived way. The New York Post, for example, reported:
"'Art Thou King of the queers?' McNally's Pontius Pilate character asks. 'Thou sayest,' Joshua answers."
This is unacceptable!
Defend Jesus' honor by peacefully, but loudly raising your voice against this blasphemy. And please offer prayers and sacrifices in reparation.
GO here to send your e-protest message NOW.
Thank you!
Sincerely,
Robert Ritchie
YouTube Update!
But the reaction is going global and we won't give up. Protestors from countries like Poland, Germany, Brazil, Australia, Britain, Canada and Russia are joining.
So I'm taking advantage of the growing outrage to triple our push to get the videos removed. And here's what I ask you to do:
Send a NEW petition message via email to Mr. Eric Schmidt, CEO and chairman of Google. Google owns YouTube and their motto is: "Don't be evil."
So please tell YouTube to put an end to this sacrilegious evil.
Send them a petition NOW.
Thank you and please pass on this message to friends and family.

An Elopment
It all started one day at about 12:30 pm (lunch break) and I happened to be on my gmail chatting with Lanta (Sara). Now, previous to this, she had been proposed and engaged to none other than... The Witch King of Angmar! Yes, you heard me correctly... almost. You see, the one who proposed to her wasn't the Witch King from the book/movie (the one who stabbed Frodo and then killed by Eowyn and Merry) this is that Witch King's twin. So the one from the book is Lanta's witch kings evil twin. For simplicities sake, we'll call Lanta's "husband" Cor Fearan (That's his name) and the other on WK. So where was I?
Oh yes, we were chatting about how the sky really isn't up, it's down (prehaps another post on that later) when I hit on an idea. Lanta and Cor should elope! I have always wanted to arrange an elopment, and as Elenatintil (Lanta's "mother") didn't seem to like Cor (no one else did either) I figured that there were no two better candidates then them!
I quickly told her of the plan and then we frantically began posting on the forum. 1) so we wouldn't get cought, 2) because I only had 20 minutes before I started school again. So in about 20 minutes, we got the maid of honor on there, and Lanta and Cor were married! I was so nervous... but everything went flawlessly. The reactions afterwards were priceless.
War almost broke out when Elena (who somehow is best friends with the whole Fellowship, maybe because she married Theodred) rounded them up to attack me for my innocent helping hand! But we decided that a war was not in anyone's best interests, and so peace prevailed.
For now then my wish for an elopment has been satisfyed... for now. ;)
In case you are still confused about the whole "evil twin thing" Cor and the WK are identical, but Sauron only gave them one ring, because he didn't know there were two of them, and so got them confused. Cor and the WK kept fighting over it and fighting over it until Sauron got a headache and told them to share it. You may be surprised at the evilest being in Middle-earth telling someone to share something, but he was under a lot of pressure at the time since the Last Alliance was coming to chop off his finger.
If you still can't understand what I am talking about - and I would be shocked if you can't - then you can read my book! It is called "My Niece Married the Witch King: And I Helped Her Do It"
It is quite fascinating and I have no doubt that someday it shall be recognized as one of the greatest literary classics of all time.
Remember, don't say more.... say Mordor!
Ps. No, I still don't know what that means. Lanta?
PPs. Oh yes, and the President of the US was one of the groomsmen for the wedding. If you remember, we had kidnapped him.

Welcoming Two Evil Twins to the Blogosphere!
Lantamiste (Sara)
and
Bridget
just came out with a blog this past week, entitled "Random Profound Thoughts by Two Evil Twins", and I must say it is one of the most entertaining blogs I have ever come across! Actually, I dare say it is the most entertaining blog I have ever read! Which, if you know these two from the FT forum, shouldn't be surprising. They are always doing such strange and wacky things; getting kidnapped, kidnapping the President of the US (I helped with that one, actually), bowling using a Palantir and their forum mother's garden statues... oh, and eloping! Now that is an interesting and thrilling tale. I played a major part in it, you know. Hmmm, =) but that is a tale for another post!
So I insist you all go and visit the charming blog of my nieces, give them a warm welcome and a hug from Aunt Rose. Trust me, you will not be bored!
Don't say more, say Mordor!
(Ps. No I DON'T know what that means.)
(Pps. They just posted essential life saving advice today, be sure and check it out!)
Once again, welcome Bridget and Lanta, to the wonderful world of Blog!

It is a Poverty
I believe the truest measure of any society is how it treats those who are least able to defend and speak for themselves. And who is more vulnerable, or more innocent, than a child?
--- Sarah Palin
I'm sure I'm not the only one who has heard in these past few weeks a lot of: Catholics have one-track minds. Catholics are one-issue voters. Catholics won't use reason and won't think for themselves.
Because of the unwavering stance of devout Catholics against abortion, many are prompted to make such comments.
I don't consider myself as being a one-issue voter. I do, however, think that I have my priorities straight. When I think of the innocents being slaughtered day after day, and when I think of Christ who suffered and died for the guilty, I can't think of an issue that's higher on the list.
But like I said, I don't consider myself as being a one-issue voter. In voting for life in the best way I'm capable of, I firmly believe that I'm also addressing the other failings of society. I don't see everything as disconnected. I don't see there as being the economy, and then education, and then health-care, and then... one thing is going to impact another in some way. A society's values, or lack of, will effect all aspects of that society.
And I believe that society is founded on the family, and that when babies are being killed in their mother's wombs, family is in a bad state and so is society.
I believe that a society in which thousands are legally butchered daily cannot hope to pull itself out of any mud it's slipped into until it walks away from the gates of hell.
Yes, I'm voting pro-life. I have never apologized for it, and I never intend to. People have and will continue to say that when our country is plunged into poverty and darkness because of my bull-headed one-issue voting, I'll have only myself to thank for it.
Poverty? I happen to agree with Mother Teresa when she said: "It is a poverty to decide that a child must die so that you may live as you wish."
Pray for an end to the slaughter. Pray for America, its citizens, and its leaders.

Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary
The historical origin of the rosary lies in the Middle Ages. People looked for some kind of psalter for them and found the prayers to Mary with the mysteries of the life of Jesus Christ, strung out like beads on a necklace. They touch you in a meditative way, so that the repetition allows the soul to settle into tranquility and, holding fast to the Word, above all to the figure of Mary and to the images of Christ that pass you by, make your soul calm and free and grant it a vision of God. The rosary does in fact provide a link for us with this primitive knowledge that repetition is a part of prayer, of meditation, that repetition is a way of settling oneself into the rhythm of tranquility. It's a matter of allowing myself to be carried away by the calm of repetition and of steady rhythm. So much the more so, since this text does not lack content. It brings great images and visions and above all the figure of Mary - and through her the figure of Jesus - before my eyes.
These people had needed a prayer to bring them calm, to take them out of themselves, away from their troubles, and set before them consolation and healing. This basic experience in the history of religion, of repetition, of rhythm, of words in unison, of singing together, which carries me and soothes me and fills my space, which does not torment me, but lets me be still and comforts me and sets me free, has here become fully Christian, in that people pray quite simply in the Marian context and in that of the appearance of Christ to men, and yet at the same time let this prayer be internalized them - where the soul becomes one with the words.
Our Lady of the Rosary.... Pray for Us!

My Power is Made Perfect in Weakness
The call to participate in 40 Days for Life is a call
to sacrifice. It's a call that, when answered, often
brings unexpected joy, as seen in these postings from
the 40 Days for Life blog:
* Angela wrote, "I am so excited to see so many
people arriving at these clinics to pray for
life!"
* Pat noted, "I am so grateful for the 40 days of
prayer and fasting. Praise Jesus!"
* Julie said, "I believe this campaign could be the
beginning of the end of abortion in this country.
In my adult life, I have yet to dare to have that
hope -- until now.
Unexpected joy arrived one evening at the 40 Days for
Life vigil outside the Planned Parenthood location in
Sioux City, Iowa as people gathered to pray.
A bus from Michigan broke down at the fast food
restaurant right across the street. The bus was
carrying a Christian drama team -- including 13
children with disabilities. The assistant director
saw the vigil across the street, so he walked over
and started asking questions.
Stormy, one of the vigil participants, had a bunch of
questions for him as well. When she found out who
they were and what they did, she asked if they would
put on a play -- right then and there.
"They did! Right there, facing Planned Parenthood,
these special kids and friends re-enacted the Passion
of Christ," Mary reports. "The young man who
portrayed Jesus had Down syndrome. He stretched out
his arms and 'hung on the cross.' "
The assistant director said he cries every time he
watches the kids do this play. "It might have
something to do with the actor playing Jesus," she
said, "who gets so emotional that he can't stop
crying."
Before they left from their home town of Holland,
Michigan, their principal had told them that he
didn't know when or where, but he just had a feeling
they would hold one additional performance at a time
and place that was not listed on their original
schedule.
"We are sure glad it was here," said Mary. "They were
terrific and they were so pleased to perform for
people who respect all life. Their replacement bus
arrived just after the kids were able to receive lots
of applause and thanks and a 40 Days for Life
bracelet."
The death of the innocent Lord and Savior -- staged
in front of Planned Parenthood, an organization
responsible for ending hundreds of thousands of
innocent lives every year; performed by special needs
children, upon whom the abortion industry has
declared open season -- how powerful!
There is indeed joy. And there is indeed hope.

The Heart of Missionary Impulse
Therese never set foot in a missionary territory and was never able to practice any missionary activity directly. Yet she did grasp that the Church has a heart, and she grasped that love is this heart. She understood that the Apostles can no longer preach and the martyrs can no longer shed their blood if this heart is no longer burning. She grasped that love is all, that it reaches beyond times and places. And she understood that she herself, the little nun hidden behind the grille of a Carmel in a provincial town in France, could be present everywhere, because as a loving person she was there with Christ in the heart of the Church...
This center, which Therese calls simply "heart" and "love", is the Eucharist. For the Eucharist is not only the enduring presence of the divine and human love of Jesus Christ, which is always the source and origin of the Church and without which she would founder, would would be overcome by the gates of hell. As the presence of the divine and human love of Christ, it is also always the channel open from the man Jesus to the people who are His "members", themselves becoming a Eucharist and thereby themselves a "heat" and a "love" for the Church...
The heart must remain the heart, that through the heart the other organs may serve aright. It is at that point, when the Eucharist is being celebrated aright.
